Anal Fissure

Anal fissure is a painful tear in the lining of the anal canal that causes severe pain during bowel movements. Conservative treatment includes a high-fiber diet, stool softeners, increased water intake, and warm sitz baths. When medical therapy fails, lateral internal sphincterotomy becomes necessary. This outpatient procedure involves making a small, controlled cut in the internal anal sphincter muscle to reduce pressure and allow proper healing. Most patients experience pain relief within days to weeks, with complete healing in 6-8 weeks. Success rates approach 90%.
